The Things They Carried By Tim O Brien - 976 Words

In â€Å"The Things They Carried†, Tim O’Brien presents a different perspective on what war is really about, along with the burdens constantly borne by soldiers. Through his use of flashbacks, imagery, and pathos, O’Brien shows just how the life of a soldier is much more than war and violence, but combating the burdens of life that soldiers carry with them. Right from the start of his story, O’Brien mentions flashbacks and shows their influence in the mind of a soldier like Jimmy Cross. The story starts off with Jimmy telling the reader about a girl from back home named, Martha. As soon as she is mentioned he drifts into a reminiscent state of mind, imagining romantic camping trips, but this is short lived, as he is quick to jump back into reality and move his men along. However, it is not long before he beings to think of her later that night. This begins the first of many flashbacks throughout the story. Less than a page later, O’Brien writes abou t a memory involving Jimmy and Martha at a movie theatre. He recalls the movie they saw, what happened between them, and what he wishes would have happened as well. The more they occur, these flashbacks serve as a contrast acknowledging that the country of Vietnam is not the only thing that is war-torn. As O’Brien inscribes more and more about how Jimmy daydreams about Martha, the reader begins to realize his attention should be elsewhere.
